Porphyrion Cultivars and HybridsThere are more than 600 named cultivars of species and hybrids between species of Porphyrion Saxifrages. These are often referred to as Porophyllum, Kabschia and Engleria Saxifrages. We hope to show and describe an increasing selection of these wonderful plants on these pages. Latin hybrid names have been given to many hybrid combinations of species or crosses. Cultivars with known ancestry consisting of one of these combinations of 2 or more species share a cross name. These are referred to as Classified cultivars. Often, though, the parent species are not known; either the breeder did not record the information, or it has been lost in the mists of time. Alternatively, the cultivar may have simply resulted from a chance seedling. These are the Non-classifiable cultivars. Non-classifiable also include plants whose parents may be known, but one or both parents are themselves non-classifiable. Recently, hybrids have been bred where the number of species involved is as many as 6. Clearly the hybrid naming schema starts to break down. These species combinations will not receive hybrid names and so also are found under Determined (but unclassified) cultivars. Lastly there are cultivars that are simply selections of species found wild, or in cultivation but which are not botanically significant .
